Tsukiji

Established in 1934, "Tsukiji" (築地) is a historically significant and highly atmospheric coffee shop located in Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto, remarkably close to Kawaramachi and Gion Shijo stations. Celebrated as one of Kyoto's "Big Three" cafes and a Tabelog Top 100 Coffee Shop (2021, 2022), this venerable establishment holds the distinction of being the first in Kyoto to serve Vienna coffee. The interior, often described as Gothic or "old castle-like," is adorned with dark, highly decorative wooden elements, creating a captivating Showa retro ambiance complemented by classical music. While its unique charm attracts a diverse clientele, including many university students, it is important to note that the entire premises are smoking-allowed, which contributes to a strong tobacco aroma. Patrons can enjoy nostalgic and delicious coffee, sometimes sweetened from the start, and highly praised desserts, particularly the refreshing and creamy mousse cake with a cherry accent. Reservations are not accepted, making it a spontaneous retreat into Kyoto's rich coffee history.
